Country Context

Mali remains the epicentre of the protracted crisis in the Central Sahel, with growing displacement due to continuing insecurity, communal conflict and extreme weather events. The number of refugees and asylum-seekers in Mali has ~180,000 refugees primarily from neighbouring Niger and Burkina Faso while some 400,000 Malians remain internally displaced within the country.

Since August 2025, the Koro district in Bandiagara has witnessed significant influxes of Burkinabe refugees fleeing violence in border villages

Connectivity & Access

Mali has a developing connectivity infrastructure, with 3G networks reaching 92.4% of the population and 4G coverage extending to 81%.

However, refugees and humanitarian communities particular in remote and border regions continue to face disproportionate barriers to accessing connectivity.

Our Work

Our work is focused on expanding connectivity access for both refugees and humanitarian communities alike.

Connectivity in Koro Town

We are collaborating with Orange Mali to bring connectivity to refugees and humanitarians in and around Koro Town, as part of an ongoing emergency response. By the middle of 2026, it is expected that Orange will have upgraded existing infrastructure to ensure reliable connections for the communities there and provided technology to facilitate emergency connectivity for UNHCR teams on the move.
