Mauritania
Country Context
Mauritania, maintaining its long-standing open-door policy, hosts over 170,000 Malian refugees and asylum-seekers in the Hodh Chargui region (where Mbera camp is based) as well as in Nouakchott and Nouadhibou. With ongoing insecurity in Mali, arrivals to Mauritania have continued.
CfR efforts are directly aligned to the government’ s overall development strategy as well as social protection and financial inclusion priorities.
Country Statistics
Connectivity & Access
Mauritania has a developing connectivity infrastructure, with 3G and 4G networks reaching around 75% of the population. Internet adoption has grown steadily, with almost half of all individuals now using the internet.
However, refugees continue to face disproportionate barriers to accessing connectivity and fully participating online.
Our Work
Our work focuses on expanding connectivity access and digital inclusion programs to meet the needs of forcibly displaced and host communities while also advancing sustainable solutions, all informed by timely, refugee-specific data.
Explore our work below:
Connectivity, Needs and Usage Assessment (CoNUA)
CfR is launching an assessment to understand connectivity needs and digital financial inclusion across refugee and host communities in Mauritania, with a particular focus on the Hodh Chargui region
Connected Community Centres
CfR supported connectivity for three community centres in the Nema region, enabling their use as learning hubs focused on digital access and skills development for refugees and host communities.
